Horsey jackets

I'm putting some jackets on e-bay for Kate and wondered if anyone would be interested in them before I do? They are all medium ladies - there is a full length wax riding jacket with wrap around legs, a 3/4 Filson hunting wax jacket, Harry Hall puffa with zip off sleeves, Armani leather jacket (genuine) and a couple of 'motorbike' jackets - leather and a waterproof one.

If anyone is interested e-mail or call me.

Horsey Holidays

These 3 suggestions are just to get us thinking...

Please do add to this post and tell us more bout where you would like to take your horse on holiday and how we can organise it as a group. Thanks Jx

Meeting Minutes - 2nd December 2008

1. Previous minutes – see print out.
2. Treetops Hospice Fundraiser (The Ripple Appeal)- £4635.00 for Treetops Hospice Trust so far. 20th December The Sinners are doing a gig at The Imperial Rooms, Matlock to raise the remainder £365+ to bring the total amount to £5000 before the end of the year – Pam’s goal.
3. Bridleways
Dobbs/Pounder Lane – Liz Stoppard has organised all the paper work now, landowner signatures etc have been completed for Dobbs Lane. She has organised for Andy Land to go up to the top of the lane where it is narrow and over grown, to take a mini digger and scrape it back to its original width. This will be so much better for larger horses to get through 15hh + I have organised a free metal water pipe to be dug into the muddy area by the gates on Pounder Lane and hard core to be put on top. Hopefully this will take the stream underground.

We need some more advice about appropriate gates for the terrain on this route. Jain will ask Karen Hinckley the BHS Access Officer for the area. Quotes are still required for the gates at the top of the bridleway and this will be possible with some more advice.

The news on the green lane by Blakemere Pit (quarry) is good. It has been formally deemed that no motorbikes or 4x4's should be driving in the quarry as they will be trespassing. The Police are still actively monitoring the situation here. Hopefully this will mean a quieter and safer ride.

The group will endeavour to get an update on Tearsall Quarry and the bridleway. Liz Stoppard reported the gate on this bridleway needs replacing. Need to inform Phil Berry at Derbyshire Dales.
Sandra has BHS Coastal Access Postcards for you to send off if you want to maintain and improve access to the coast for horses and riders. Contact Sandra.
Jane Williams has the latest BHS Bridleways newsletter if anyone wants to see it.
4. Pam's Gate - Liz Stoppard has researched horsey quotes and has found the perfect one . Imagine galloping full blast over Masson hill all the way up to the top of Dobbs lane ( as we do!!) You come to the new gate at the top and on it reads " To ride a horse is to borrow freedom". We think Pam would like that one.

5. Christmas holiday ride to Grange Mill and back is being organised by Jane Williams.
Details to follow

6. Blog page – Sending out new invites. Hopefully you will get the invites otherwise I am writing this for my benefit only!!!

7. Website – Most pages could do with updating especially the “about us”; “news”; “Events” pages. Please, please, please we need more help with updating the website. This is how we show what we re up to, it helps us get money for bridleway gates etc. I need 3 people to help with this. You do not need to do anything on a computer - just write out what should be on the website page and Liz Stoppard and I will do the rest ;-)

8. AOB - We discussed the possibility of a group weekend/ few days away with horses and a couple of suggestions were made:

a) Somerford Park, Cheshire

b) George Caldicott's place

I know there are quite a few other places around too. So my suggestion is to start a new "post" on the blog and tell each other about the places, giving website links where possible and contacts details so people can look at what is available. Here are a couple of websites to get us going...

9. Date of next meeting Tuesday March 10th 2009, 7.30 p.m. Kings Head pub.

Please post agenda items on this blog but remember the whole world can see us!

Public or private blog??

We wanted to find out if you are all comfortable with the whole wide world seeing this blog or whether you wanted to have it restricted so that only we can see it...

  • If we make it so only we see the contents then you need to remember your login details everytime.
  • If we keep it so anyone can see the blog then we probably need to be more careful about personal information we post such as addresses etc.

If you have any comments about this can you post a comment on here and we will monitor the consensus. Thanks.

Meeting minutes - 15th Sept 2008

Attended: JB, JH, CB, LS
Apologies: SH, LH

Treetops Hospice fundraiser
Before Pam died, she wanted to raise £1000 for Treetops Hospice. Liz H and Sandra felt moved to help this appeal and set about doing a 3-day ride. Liz H and Sandra were not able to come to the meeting because they were still out on the North Yorkshire moors finishing off the 41 mile sponsored ride they had organised. We all said it was a great event and that it would be good to repeat it again some time. We have had some fabulous news as well - we have been lucky enough to secure a very large donation to this cause and that is on top of raising £500 through the Justgiving website http://www.justgiving.co.uk/rustyandgina . If anyone still wants to donate then visit the website and start giving... I don't know the final figure, but we'll update the blog soon and let everyone know.

Pounder and Dobbs Lane
Liz S has secured £2,500 to mend the dry stone walls on this Bridleway. She will very kindly be completing all the paperwork associated with it and organising for wallers to carry out the work. Liz will also investigate the purchase of 2 new gates on Dobbs Lane, the one at the very top (held on by just some bayler twine) and the one just before the open field (as you ride from the bottom to the top). We are hoping that the very top gate that has fabulous views will be the memorial gate for Pam. We discussed having a message carved in it rather than a plaque that could come loose and fall off. We will keep in touch with David about this. Comment on the blog if you have anything to say.

BR Summer Events
The Carnival Ride went well and we agreed to repeat this next year. The 1-day horse show was also a great success and a good fundraiser for the group. Thanks to everyone who was so busy organising these. We would like to repeat this again next year with the permission of the landowners. Following the horse show that same evening, we had a family feast of yummy food. Thanks to everyone who brought food and thanks to Sandra for being the hostess with the mostess.

Future BR Events
The following potential events were discussed:
1 group ride per quarter:
  • Carnival ride route
  • Elton Cafe round ride (when the cafe is open)
  • High Peak Trail ride
  • Wensley ride

We need to get volunteers to organise each ride, email members and ensure that BHS are informed. Please can you see if you could offer to help and comment on the blog if possible.

Mini Le Trec event.
Some evening talks.
A horsey holiday next year.

Friday December 12th Bonsall Riders Christmas Do at The Barleymow pub in Bonsall. Liz S is organising this so please give your names to her. Thanks.

Other Future Events
South Wingfied Riding group have a talk in November that is free to attend. Caroline will send details of this through soon.

Monty Roberts has an event locally:Mon 27 Oct Arena UKAllington, Grantham, Lincolnshire NG32 2EFTues 28 Oct Rodbaston College Penkridge, Staffordshire ST19 5PH

HOYS is 8th-12th October at Birmingham's NEC

Your Horse Live is on November 7th, 8th & 9th 2008

Secretary Post
We discussed the need to have a secretary so that the decision-making for the group is not held with too few people. We will muddle on for now but we are asking if anyone has some time to be the group's secretary we would be very pleased to hear from you.

Next Meeting: Tuesday December 2nd at 7.30 p.m. at The Kings Head.

Jain H Chairperson

Wednesday, 10 September 2008

Next meeting 15th September 7.30 p.m.

Our next meeting for Bonsall Riders is on Monday September 15th at 7.30 p.m. at Liz Stoppard's house (83 High Street, Bonsall, back of the Kings Head Car Park, thank you Liz for providing the venue).

This is a particularly poignant meeting as Pam will not be with us anymore and we need to talk about who will do the secretary role for the rest of the year.

Other things to talk about are:
  • Events over the summer and ones to be organised.
  • Bank account and money.
  • Pink high viz vests for sale.
  • BHS Bridleways news.

If anyone has anything else they want to add to he agenda, please add a post to this blog. I look forward to seeing you next week.

Liz Howsley and Sandra Harris will not be with us as they will still be out riding and raising money for Pam's hospice in the wilds of the North Yorkshire moors!

SADDLE CHECKING SERVICE

I have removed the details of Pam's SADDLE CHECKING service. But here is why you might want to have your saddle checked:

Saddle problems can often be caused by: ·

Bucking through transitions

Cold backed

Shuffling paces, reluctance to step through

Difficulty in bending /flexion

Asymmetric (uneven) muscle development across the back

Heavinness in the hand

Fidgeting and biting when tacking up

Spooking and nervousness · And more …………..

Clients can see a remarkable difference in their horses way of going and behaviour when they have a correctly fitted saddle! Saddle fitting extends beyond a few measurements, the shape, profile, back and shoulder of the horse and the type of riding, the actual rider and level of skill and the construction and budget and quality of the saddle are all part of finding the best saddle for your horse. Good saddle fitters always put the horse first, some fit the saddle to the rider, it can make the difference of winning or losing! Good saddle fitters can often tell people that they have a problem with the horse in the school or stable ‘’before’ being told the problems that they have with the saddle.

David Speck

3. Chairperson’s Report

Elizabeth talked through her report, which had been distributed to all members, she announced her retirement and was presented with a bouquet of flowers to thank her for her commitment and hard work over the past year which were organised by Jane Briggs.

4. Secretary’s Report

Pam talked through her report and action plan. Elizabeth suggested TROT to landowners, Pam to do an article in Mutterings. Venue was agreed to be at Liz Stoppards House in future, thanks is due to Liz. Elizabeth offered to attend Safer Derbyshire Meetings to keep the group in the loop.

5. Presentation of Financial Report

Pam talked through the end of year financial report and reported a surplus of £115.50 at 31st March 2008.

6. Election of Officers

All officers retired from their posts an election took place and the following was agreed:

Chairperson – Jain Holmes
Vice Chairperson – Sandra Harris
Secretary – Pam Taylor-Speck
Treasurer – Jane Briggs

The meeting was handed over to Jain Holmes to continue.

7. Any Other Business

Elizabeth reported that the Police had confiscated 4 motorbikes with no insurance or helmets on Moor Road, they are contacting the landowners of the track if they say they don’t want them on their land the Police will advise that they are trespassing, if so they will go down the line of planning permission. The gated road is being speed watched by the Police. Dobbs Lane and Pounders Lane are restricted byways and a BOAT application needs to go to Crown Prosecution. BOATS were discussed at length and the problems with gates at Pounder Lane. Jane Williams asked about the water course and whether it had been reported to Phil Berry.

Liz said that she has all the information on how to grade bridleways and reported that the bikes going up Dobb Lane had vastly reduced since the sign went up.

It was reported that several members attended the Safer Derbyshire Meeting.

Elizabeth requested that Bonsall Riders joined in the carnival this year. There was a lengthy conversation about safety and a trotting race was suggested. It was decided to do a ride through the village wearing high viz tabards with Bonsall Riders written on them. Elizabeth offered to source some reasonable priced tabards and screen printing, which would be paid out of group funds, this would also encourage safety and wearing of high viz to members. Jain Holmes offered to talk to Carnival Committee.

Pam reported that unpaid memberships are now overdue.

The next General meeting was agreed to be Monday 23rd June at 7.30 pm at Liz Stoppard’s House, 83 Yoeman Street, please send apologies if unable to attend.

8.Next AGM 2009

The date will be in April 2009.

Police Alert over rustlers

Printed in Derby Evening Telegraph 30th May Page 5

Police have warned owners of horses to keep an eye on their animals amid fears that gangs could steal them to order.

Inspector Erica Green, Co-ordinator of Horse Watch, a partnership between the public and the police designed to cut equine crime said that men had been seen taking pictures of horses in Derbyshire Dales and the High Peak.

She said that she believed that the gang could either be planning to steal the animals to order or to post the pictures on the internet advertising that the horses were for sale.

Payment would be taken but the horses never delivered. Horse Watch members have been sent text messages, letters, emails and faxes warning them to be on their guard.

Bonsall in California - riding club

I emailed this riding group today who are in Bonsall in California. Here is the reply I got...

Hi Jain~

Thanks for the friendly note!

We share the same name, but your area appears to be much more rural that ours. Bonsall, USA is located in a somewhat heavily populated area of Southern California about seven miles inland from the Pacific Ocean. Although Vista Palomar Riders count ourselves lucky to own sufficient land for our clubhouse and show arenas, almost all members must still trailer horses to the site. From there, it is only a short bridle path along the roadway to access a pretty good trail that follows the San Luis Rey River and there are other trails in nearby areas. Our biggest challenge is that equestrians are becoming more and more landlocked as available acreage is increasingly converted into residential housing. In fact, our original location in the nearby city of Vista, California, was bought out by developers who built our clubhouse and arenas in Bonsall. In those days, club members participated in an annual two-day ride from the ocean (Vista) to the mountain (Palomar), which is why we are called the Vista Palomar Riders.

We believe that Bonsall was named after a minister who settled the area, but perhaps he was from the UK? I am attaching a copy of a previous newsletter that has a short article about the history of Bonsall. It is wonderful to hear that you are working to preserve the bridle paths. Keep up the good work.

Happy trails!

Mary A. Bennett

If you go to their website and look at their newsletter, you will see that they are doing pretty much the same as us. However, they do organise a "campout" for horses and riders! Liz thinks that sounds a great idea... So watch out for details in the coming months.... J

Bonsall Carnival

Jain Holmes our new Chairperson has spoken to Hazel about the ride for the carnival.

We have arranged that it will be on Monday 28th July. We will start from The Fountain and head away from The Cross because it will be jammed up with people doing the fun run! The Fun Run starts at 7.00 p.m. and goes up towards the church and up Ember Lane and through the fields will be finished by about 8 p.m. back at The Cross.

In order to bring a little more fun to the event, we thought it might be nice to make it a kind of horsey treasure hunt... with a relevant horsey prize for the winner. We will charge a £1 entry fee and the proceeds from this can go into the Carnival pot (this is usual for Carnival events).

So I reckon that we need to do the following:

· Get our BHS membership sorted so we have insurance cover!
· Decide a start time (and let Hazel know ASAP).
· Discuss a route suitable for all levels and probably to include the horses pulling traps/carts. Perhaps 45 mins to 1 hour in length?
· Work out a treasure hunt.
· Buy a suitable prize (? High viz equipment for road safety???).
· ?? Buy numbers for people to wear so we can check them out and returning for safety.
· Organise marshals for the event.
· Get the event on the website and blog.
· Contact all our members and get them to invite at least 1 person and horse along.
· Get T-shirts/high viz vests printed.

Hazel will make sure we are in the Carnival Programme that gets sold all over the village. If we need to get the lorry park for parking, Hazel may be able to sort this out.

Can we have some volunteers to help organise this please? Can you get intouch with Jain Holmes or I please.

Thanks
Pam

Next General Meeting

The next General Meeting will be Monday 23rd June at 7.30 pm at Liz Stoppard's House, 83 Yoeman Street, Bonsall, opposite the Kings Head Car Park, thank you Liz for the offer of the venue!

See you there can you give me apologies please?

Regards
Pam

Bridleways Website

Has anyone looked at this useful website I met the proprietors who are based in South Wingfield a couple of weeks ago and they asked if there was something we could do in conjunction with them. www.bridleways.co.uk they also organised the Paddock Maintenance event and they told me that they will be doing more events in the future.

Whilst I was on there I noticed this advert;

Anybody local up for a ride around Carsington with me? I have just got a lovely gentle 16' 2" thoroughbred and would love some company for my first trip out! Just riding in the field at the moment, but I am riding distance to Carsington. Also, does anybody need grazing in the Wirksworth area? Summer or longer term available to keep a very gentle gelding company? 07967977179

Safer Derbyshire Meeting

Several members of Bonsall Riders attended the Safer Derbyshire Meeting at the Village Hall on 29th April. please see the following bullet points from notes I made at the meeting:
  • The Police would prefer at this stage not to prosecute offending motorcyclists and 4X4 they are choosing to use information/communication and word of mouth at this current time and enforcement was a last resort, there was some concern around the table from residents about this.

  • Police informed us that the offenders when informed of the upset they were causing to villagers they said they didnt realise that it was that much of a problem to us.

  • Police have been giving leaflets out and said progress will happen but will be slow.

  • The Police confirmed that there are legitimate rights of way that can be used by motorised transport in the Bonsall area, which are attracting people from all over the country as far away as Wales! Bonsall Moor is featured on Youtube.

  • Police confirmed that there have only been 11 calls for service from the Police concerning the issue over the past 12 months mainly from the same source.

  • It was confirmed that Dobb Lane is a restricted by way and I made a request that hot spot times be identified and requested a Police presence at those particular times i.e. Sunday lunchtime at the entrance of Dobb Lane.

  • Signage has been removed and needs replacing.

  • Police went around the table to and ascertained what residents actual issues were, which included, speeding through the village, large towing vehicles in narrow lanes, not being able to ride on the bridleways at weeekends because of the vehicles using them as it isnt safe, the damage to the landscape, petty crimes being committed in the area, fly tipping, using bikes on farmers land, verbal abuse and the noise to name but a few.

  • Police said that they would draw up an action plan and ascertain what staffing and locations they need to find/cover.

  • You can call PSCO 4512 Hannah Burns to report any issues you have Tel: 0845 123 33 33 or email her Hannah.Burns.4512@derbyshire.pnn.police.uk

  • There were concerns from around the table that someone would have to be killed before something is done about the issue.

ACTION WE NEED TO TAKE:

  • Report all incidents - the Police are figure driven - do not feel like you are being a nuisance.

  • Report signage to the Council if you notice it has been broken down.

  • Report incidents on this blog of near misses and abuse if experienced we can use it as evidence.

  • Report any patterns or regular use of bridleways to the PCSO Burns that you notice.

  • Put comments on any Youtube insertions that you notice regarding Bonsall Moor saying that the Police are monitoring the situation.

We all need to work together to sort this issue out and if we dont take any action the issues will continue and probably get worse.

Introducing Sugar - By Pam

I thought it might be nice if we could introduce ourselves and our horses to each other on this site so I thought I would start the ball rolling by introducing Sugar to you. I purchased Sugar about 4 years ago from a dealer, she had come from Kingswood Equestrian Centre, Shropshire, it is a renowned competition venue http://www.kingswoodec.com/ I think the person who owned her had got into financial difficulties and soon ran up a large livery bill, which on such a good facility wouldnt be difficult. She was sold on to a dealer whom I purchased her off and of course I didnt get her papers with her as she had been confiscated!! I checked with the yard manager and they told me that she had been competing at novice level in dressage and was scoring around 65%, so she knew more than me. She is lovely to handle, she like all horses has her odd quirks like she doesnt like worming syringes, but is great to handle in almost all ways. She loves a fuss and good groom. She doesn't really enjoy riding out alone and prefers to be in company, so that could do with some more work.
The first time I took her out to compete on her I went to Weston Lawns in Bulkington where I used to live http://www.westonlawnsequitation.co.uk/ the competition was high that day and I came 5th, so you can imagine I was chuffed, but of course Sugar was better trained than me! I was lucky at that particular time though as I had a dressage instructor and judge teaching me who was on my yard at the time. Since I have had Sugar in this area I have found it difficult to school her because facilities and yards local to Bonsall are few and far between and as Bonsall is so hilly, it has been difficult to find a flat area to school on so Sugar has been wasted really, but I am sure she has enjoyed her time off and she seems to have calmed down a lot since she has rested. We had to sort a pelvic issue out with her last year, I think she fallen in the field so most of last summer was wiped out really, but she appears to be fine after manipulation by a guy that Sam Bradley recommended to me.
I have now moved Sugar over to Alderwasley she is at Sandyford Farm which has a school http://www.sandyfordfarm.co.uk/ and I have been allowed to mark a 20 x 40 mtr area out in the field to ride in so I am going to be able to school again this year, my health willing, which I am quite excited about. We have a trailer and she loads fine so I am hoping when Sugar is fit and and I am well enough we will be able to do shows again.
Sugar is 15.1 hh, I think she is blanket spot apaloosa and I have had people say that she looks like mustang or small sports horse, so I am not sure what she is really. I believe she is about 12 - 13 years old. A friend of mine took her to a one day event and she did really well at dressage, she jumped the majority of the cross country jumps and gets quite excited at the prospect of jumping, but me being that bit older and not wanting to not bounce at my age I dont really do jumping. If there is someone that wants to have go at jumping her that can teach her what to do they are welcome to have a go! So I am going to try and tidy her up a bit schooling wise this summer and plod around the lovely lanes in the Alport/Alderwasley area and if my health improves get out and about on the trailer with her Amber my husband's horse or any friends that may like to join me. My health problem is preventing me from exercising her as much as she needs so if anyone wants to volunteer to help please get in touch.

Safer Derbyshire Meeting

Next Tuesday 29th April, there is a 'Safer Derbyshire' meeting to be held at the Village Hall, where - I believe - there will be police, fire, ambulance and council representatives. The whole thing has been a little 'hush hush' - and the time doesn't exactly help - 2pm in the afternoon! I'm planning on attending, but if anyone else is able to come it would be great. I'm not sure if we will get the chance to give our comments, or whether it is an information only meeting. If anyone is able to come, please let me know - we could meet up at the cafe beforehand for lunch if you'd like?

Chairs Comment

Hi all - Elizabeth here - as you may have heard, I shall be stepping down as Chair at the AGM next month. I have enjoyed my year as Chair, but now I'm really busy working for Kate and I've recently become a parish councillor - so time is a little short! Now that everything is set up, the role isn't really too taxing. I've suggested to Pam that next year we arrange all the rides for the year - maybe one a month? Then take volunteers to 'look after' each event - so all the texting round beforehand and finding out who is coming, arranging lifts and cancellations etc doesn't always fall to one person. This will lighten the load of the Chair dramatically. I certainly want to be involved with the group still and will try and attend most of the rides etc.

I hope everyone feels that they have got something out of the group and we've certainly achieved a lot with the bridleway clearing etc that everyone is able to enjoy now. I hope you'll all be joining us again next year and whoever is at the helm will provide an exciting schedule I'm sure.

Paddock Talk Tansley Village Hall

Hi could you let me know if you would like to attend this event we have agreed to subsidise it £5.50 in advance tickets for those that would like to go, it would be helpful if we could have someone in the group to go and they can help others with any questions and bring back any interesting information back to the group from the evening. Replies by Weds 23rd April Please ASAP. I will sort the booking out just need the names and numbers.

Thanks Pam

Dear Bridleways User,
We are holding an important talk about improving & maintaining good grazing paddocks at Tansley Village Hall near Matlock to help horse owners get a better understanding of what can be done throughout the year.
Wet weather conditions coupled with horses being turned out daily can leave fields and paddocks in a poor and muddy condition. The informative advice provided at this event will give you the knowledge of how to restore your grazing and rectify the damage done throughout the winter. We want you to have the opportunity to learn about different maintenance methods and gain further information, with the help of expert, David Long of CWG Farming and Country Supplies.
The talk will be held on Tuesday 6th May 2008 at 7.30pm at Tansley Village Hall, Church Street, Tansley, just off the A615 Matlock road. Tickets cost £5.50 in advance or £7.50 on the door.
Any profits raised will go towards documenting more off-road riding routes in Derbyshire.
